Virginia State Police reports that a two-vehicle crash occurred at 12:52 p.m. Thursday in the 9200 block of Orby Cantrell Highway. A pickup truck and motorcycle collided and at least one person was taken to Norton Community Hospital for treatment of injuries. No further information has been released. The crash remains under investigation. ![]() Driver of tractor-trailer, loaded with furniture, seriously injured after Monday morning crash in Wise County. Virginia State Police reports that the crash occurred at around 1 a.m. Monday in the median of U.S. Route 58. The tractor-trailer overturned. The driver was taken to Norton Community Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening serious injuries. The crash remains under investigation. ![]() Everyone in Buchanan County has been accounted for after Tuesday night flooding affects over 100 homes. The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office reports that all who had been unaccounted for have been found. The BCSO adds that no fatalities have been reported and that they are making progress in locating those that are unaccounted for. The damage is still being surveyed, but around 100 to 150 homes have been flooded or washed away. The Virginia Department of Emergency Management reports that nearly ten miles of the county had received significant damage. On Wednesday, Governor Glenn Youngkin declared a state of emergency for the county. An emergency shelter has been set up at Twin Valley Elementary School, at 9017 Riverside Drive in Oakwood. ![]() Medical emergency leads to man being hit by SUV in Appalachia Monday morning. The Wise County Sheriff's Office reports that the incident occurred at around 9:30 a.m. on West Main Street in Appalachia. An investigation found that a UTV driver saw a BMW SUV stopped in the westbound lane facing eastbound. The driver then got out to check on the driver and the BMW then accelerated and struck him. The UTV was pushed into a town-owned truck. The UTV driver suffered serious injuries and was flown to a trauma center after Appalachia Fire Department personnel administered life-saving procedures on him. It is believed that the driver of the BMW suffered a medical emergency, and aid was provided as well as to the other driver involved. The SUV driver has been charged with reckless driving and failure to maintain control. The incident remains under investigation. ![]() Man facing arson charges after church fire in Norton. The Norton Police Department reports that Ramsey Freewill Baptist Church caught fire on July 2. The church suffered smoke damage along several church pews and a wall, as well. The church was broke into through the back door and that the front of the church near the altar had been set on fire. Restoration work is underway, while the services are being held in the church fellowship hall. James Garland Mefford has been arrested and is facing multiple charges, including trespassing, entering with intent to damage, burglary, and arson. ![]() Ballad Health plans to close Mountain View Regional Hospital in Norton. The health care provider says the closure will happen in 2023. Ballad had already converted the hospital into a skilled nursing facility. Plans call to move the beds to Norton Community Hospital, two miles away by April. Mountain View has 20 patients and Ballad is looking at moving them to other long-term care sites. ![]() Man has been charged following a shooting in Wise County Monday evening. The Wise County Sheriff's Office reports that deputies reported to Tompkins Road in Pound at 7:14 p.m. Monday due to a shooting. Prior to their arrival, a man had been taken to the Dickenson County Hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the back of his leg. He was later transferred to the Johnson City Medical Center prior to being released. An investigation found that the victim and his girlfriend had went to 42-year-old Morgan Lee Tompkins' home, where a confrontation took place leading to the shooting. Tompkins has been charged with aggravated malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. ![]() Boil water notice issued for parts of Castlewood. The notice has been issued for Gravel Lick Road and Red Oak Ridge Road. Town officials will inform customers when they no longer need to boil water. Crews have repaired the broken water main and are refilling the water storage tanks, flushing water mains, and collecting water samples for bacteriological analysis. The issue is expected to be fixed within the next two days. |
