![]() 2020 was the worst year on record for fatal overdoses in Virginia. The Virginia Department of Health reports that nearly 2,300 people died from overdoses. That is a 41 percent increase from 2019, which was already record-breaking. Fentanyl, a potent opioid that often gets mixed in with other drugs, accounted for about 72 percent of all overdose deaths.
