Five people are dead, including two deputies, after a shooting near Boone, North Carolina. The Watauga County Sheriff's Office reports that a call came in for a welfare check along Hardaman Circle due to a homeowner and his family not attending work recently or responding to telephone calls. Upon arrival, deputies noticed that all vehicles belonging to the residents were on the property, so they proceeded to enter the home. They received gunfire from an unknown individual inside and two deputies were struck by the gunfire. One officer, Sergeant Chris Ward, died after being flown to the Johnson City, Tennessee Medical Center for treatment. K-9 Deputy Logan Fox died at the scene. The shooter remained active for hours, barricading himself in a section of the home and periodically firing gunshots toward officers. Authorities announced Thursday morning that the suspect is dead, but it is not clear how he was killed, as are the suspect's two parents.
