A Hawkins County woman has been charged with aggravated child abuse after the death of her son in 2019. 8-month-old Malcolm Xavier Smith was taken to a hospital on June 30, 2019 and was on a feeding tube for possible shaken baby syndrome and died just a couple of weeks later at the East Tennessee Children's Hospital, in Knoxville, on July 15. The Department of Children's Services investigated the case for child abuse against the mother, Jennifer Smith, of Rogersville, at the same time and a grand jury returned the indictment for one count of aggravated child abuse last month. Smith was arrested on Wednesday and taken to the Hawkins County Jail, where she is being held on a $100,000 bond.
