NEW LAWS IN VIRGINIA WILL ADJUST POLICE WORK AND CRIMINAL ENFORCEMENT

7/6/2020

New Virginia laws are expected to adjust police work and criminal enforcement. Governor Ralph Northam's new laws have a stronger push on recording every interrogation. Officers should also be making all efforts in reaching out to a guardian before taking minors in for questioning. Larceny charges are also changing. It used to be a felony to steal something worth $500 or more, but now in order to be charged with a felony, it must be worth at least $1,000. The maximum jail sentence is at 20 years for grand larceny versus just one year for a misdemeanor charge. If a person has three theft misdemeanors it is punishable as a felony. Governor Northam signed the new laws into effect on July 1.
