The Virginia individual income tax season begins on Monday, January 27th and there are some important changes that taxpayers need to know about. Due to federal tax law, the Virginia standard deduction has increased to $4,500 for individuals and married couples filing separately and $9,000 for married couples filing jointly. They encourage taxpayers to file electronically, last year 4.2 million people filed individual tax returns in Virginia, and 84% did so electronically. The benefits to filing electronically are a faster processing time, you are less likely to make common mistakes, you get confirmation when the return is filed, and the electronic filing meets strict security guidelines.
